Six Indian Nationals Held In Boat Trying To Enter US

Six Indians have been arrested by US border authorities in a failed smuggling attempt to enter the US from Canada.

The Indians, aged 19-21 years, all from the Indian state of Gujarat. were on a sinking boat in the Saint Regis river in Akwesasne during their failed to enter the US, police said.

Gujarat police have started an inquiry to trace the families of the six, believed to hail from the Mehsana district of the state.

These six individuals were identified by the US authorities as N A Patel, D H Patel, N E Patel, U Patel, S Patel and D A Patel.

The seventh person, a US citizen who managed to reach the shore by himself, was arrested for facilitating human smuggling.

Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD), U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Massena Border Patrol Station caught the illegal aliens.

In January this year a family of four Indians from Gujarat's Dingucha village - Jagdish Baldevbhai Patel, 39, Vaishaliben Patel, 37, Vihangi Patel, 11 and Dharmik Patel, 3 - were found dead near Emerson, Manitoba, approximately 12 metres from the Canada/US border.

The family was attempting to cross over into the US on foot from Canada. Seven other Indian nationals, who had entered the US illegally around the same time when the Patel family was found dead, were arrested near the US/ Canada border.
